Designed to promote personal renewal and well-being, the one-story, 4,000-square-foot building recently opened its doors to the Stanford community. The third floor is the master suite, which provides the couple a space to escape the high activity of the children when needed, but also a welcome respite for the kids to play with their parents in the extended master bedroom. This floor also features a hidden work desk and a fireplace with a remarkable view over downtown San Francisco. Given the small footprint of the home and the open floor plan, the entire interior experiences direct light in the morning and evening. The renovation not only accommodates the clients and their three young sons, but also two grandparents. With the addition of the third floor, the home boasts spectacular views over the city to the east and the iconic Sutro Tower to the west.

The dining room flows out to a pool terrace through a sliding glass wall. To the right is the two-bedroom guest wing (hidden behind the forecourt wall) and a kitchen that opens to the terrace. The opposite wing contains the living room, which also spills onto the pool terrace, and the main bedroom suite, with a glass-enclosed bath that projects into the landscape. Josh says the program was fitted around the boulders “like Lego pieces,” and the negative spaces became as important as the volume.

This course explores the features, surface materials, and design options for rooftop deck systems and provides an overview of recommended planning and installation guidelines. This vastly sky-lit space serves as a spatial hub, pulling daylight deep into the home’s interior. It features a transverse bridge and a sculpted wood wall that filters and carves light as it moves through the space.

Central to the new design is a large multi-story interior garden atrium that is intended to capture outdoor space within the home. Visitors gaze out through a whole wall of glass to the oak grove on the east. On the facing wall, Oliveira’s immense Diptych, depicting two outstretched wings, is naturally lit by a narrow skylight that runs the length of the painting. The dim interiors are further subdued by a plenitude of dark-stained oak, used for the flooring, slatted ceiling, and simple benches.

“The exciting part was coming as close as we could with the architecture to almost kiss the boulders. Channeling the spirit of this mid-century modern home’s original designer, Joseph Esherick, daylight was a primary objective for this comprehensive contemporary transformation. Situated amongst much larger homes in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco, this project adapts the original design to its present-day context.

Louvered skylights wash Oliveira’s 15 to 30 foot-long paintings with natural light, providing the only light needed within the space throughout the daylight hours. Benches and cushions are strategically placed to allow visitors to quietly view both the paintings and the adjacent landscape simultaneously. Exterior contemplation spaces are integrated into the use of the center, further intensifying the connection of nature, art and contemplation.

Aidlin Darling is honored as one of Interior Design’s 2023 Hall of Fame inductees alongside managing director and principal of Gensler, Carlos M. Martínez Flórez, and textile designer and weaver Suzanne Tick. The Center for Architecture + Design, the L|J Residence and the Trestle Residence each received a top Design Award of Excellence. The Rosa Parks Elementary School Chicken Coop received a Design Award of Merit. This webinar explores how integrating technologies into our daily routines can transform our work processes and AE firm’s culture. To build the composition, hundreds of oak-clad units are assembled in vertical layers—storage boxes on the bottom, hands-on areas in the middle, displays at the top, and a cantilevering cornice at the tippy-top.

This dramatic remodel of a non-descript 1950s hillside residence converts a two-story structure into a three-story home for a growing family. The home boasts contrasting but remarkable views of the city of San Francisco to the east and Sutro Tower to the west. The front and rear facades employ 20-foot-tall, 30-inch-deep steel brise soleils to deflect light and simultaneously frame cherished views while editing out less desirable ones. The southern and northern anchor walls are skinned with hand-troweled plaster and create visual and mental privacy from the adjoining neighboring homes. In between these walls reside crystalline glass-and-steel exterior structures that provide the family with remarkable eastern views of downtown San Francisco and beautiful sunset views through a canopy of backyard trees. A living roof provides ample insulation and rainwater purification as well as an inviting natural respite within the confines of an urban setting.

This connection with nature is also found on the ground floor, where the boys’ bedroom and the playroom open out onto the garden. On the second floor, the connection is much more dramatic, with a 10-foot-long steel bridge extending out into the rear yard hillside, providing access to the garden below. Like the second-floor living room, the more private living area in the master bedroom boasts a fireplace and expansive views.

At Aidlin Darling Design, we think of design as a sensory art, one where the way a space feels is as important as how it looks. As a multidisciplinary firm, this ethos is our guiding principle across projects of any scale, use, or purpose. The steel bridge—which echoes the design language of the steel brise soleil—extends from the second-floor study into the rear garden.

The dialogue between earth and sky is reinforced through the home’s material palette of concrete, wood, glass, steel, and diffused light. The home’s once dark interior is completely transformed using restrained materials that reflect, refract, and sculpt light as it is captured. The juxtaposition of heavy and light is carried through to the smallest details. In addition to this atrium space, the house re-establishes its relationship to the landscape by way of its rear façade. A new lower level physically connects the home’s interior to outdoor living space and the landscape. The rear façade and adjacent walls reorient both indoor and outdoor space towards the landscape and city views beyond while editing neighboring structures for mutual privacy.

His work distinguishes itself as a fusion of mid-century modern and out-of-the-box aesthetics; a look that has made Dean Larkin Design one of the leading high-profile architectural firms in Twenty-First Century Los Angeles. Perched on ten acres in the hills overlooking Napa Valley, this contemporary family home is defined by a triad of gable roof structures. The design embraces the area’s agrarian vernacular as well as the family’s ties to the Welsh countryside. Lydia Lee is a freelance writer in the San Francisco Bay Area, focused on architecture and design. An internationally renowned figurative painter, Oliveira joined the Stanford faculty in 1964 and taught art there for more than 30 years. He also served as a student advisor, and became concerned with the amount of stress he observed.

News from Dezeen Events Guide, a listings guide covering the leading design-related events taking place around the world. At the back of the home, overlooking the site's steep slope, a swimming pool runs nearly the whole width of the house. Because of the area's dry climate and predictable weather, the home is made up of a series of separate wooden volumes clustered under a large, overhanging roof. This elevated vantage led to the name High Desert Retreat for the project, which earned a 2021 AIA Design Award in the interiors category.

The two monolithic walls on the north and south sides are integrally colored, steel-troweled plaster. They anchor the home in its site as well as provide privacy from neighboring homes. The main entrance to the home is covered by the overhanging roof, which is finished with a light wooden underside, into an all-glass dining area that separates the kitchen from the living room. "The parallel concrete walls not only frame the entry and the dining room beyond but most importantly the heroic view to the east and the Coachella Valley below." Eschewing the simple geometrical uniformity of modern architecture, Dean Larkin’s modern architectural design company in Los Angeles strives for a multi-layered complexity that is both effortless and elegant.

The grandparents’ and three boys’ bedrooms are on the first floor, adjacent to a small family room. This layout  offers the opportunity for the grandparents and grandchildren to bond. The dark pine planks contrast the pale wood finishes that cover the ceiling, both inside and out. The three-bedroom family home is located on a rocky plateau in the arid landscape, with views of the Coachella Valley and San Jacinto Mountain Range. So it’s no surprise that the Aidlin Darling Design studio is way more than a set of desks, chairs and computers. It is, in fact, a laboratory for testing, exploring and pushing materials.

The stair is quite porous, directly connecting the dining room, the study, and the master suite when desired. One of the study nooks on the second floor—adjacent to the kitchen and dining area—looks through the stair toward the front garden. The vertical layout of the home is driven by the relationship between the three generations that make up the household.
